Badplaas (also known as eManzana) is a hidden gem located in the Komati River Valley in Mpumalanga, known for its natural hot mineral springs. The resort town was established in 1876 at the foothills of the Dlomodlomo Mountains, where a sulphur spring is situated.
The spring delivers around 30 000 litres of hot water per hour. Swazi tribesmen were the first to discover the spring around the 1870s, and they named it "eManzana", which means "healing waters".
It became a popular stopover for gold prospectors when gold mining started in Barberton. Today Badplaas is a fantastic tourist destination, with visitors flocking to the town to enjoy the relaxing waters of the spring.
Badplaas is surrounded by lush green fields, grasslands and mountainous terrain, which makes the area popular for its mountain biking and hiking trails. The area is rich in birdlife, and visitors might spot birds like Knysna loerie, olive bush-shrike, malachite humming bird and the trumpeter hornbill. Cattle farming in Badplaas is also an important part of the region’s agriculture.
