The charming hamlet of Aurora is set against the slopes of an imposing mountain in the middle of the Sandveld, on the Cape West Coast of South Africa.
The town’s square boasts a striking church, completed in 1908, and some quaint Sandveld homes line its tranquil streets. This typical Sandveld village’s authentic characters live an uncomplicated life, luring you away from the rat race.
Waking up to the stunning dawn light, you will tend to agree with those that say the town was named after the Roman goddess of dawn, but others insist it was called after the daughter of Reverend CR Ferreira, the first Dutch Reformed minister in the area. He was a former Boer prisoner of war in Ceylon and when his daughter was baptised here, he called her Ceylonia Aurora.
Aurora attractions include a quaint town square, the NG Kerk Aurora and springtime flowers which bloom in abundance after the winter rains.
