The Namaqua Eco 4x4 route covers more than 600 km of dirt roads from Pella to Alexander Bay, following the Orange River as closely as possible.
The route is divided into two; 328 km from Pella to Vioolsdrif (3-4 days) and then 250 km from Vioolsdrif to Alexander Bay (2-3 days). Or take as long as you want and fish, chat to the locals, hike, do some birding, and just kick back and relax. A permit can be obtained at the Springbok tourism office, make sure you’re totally self-sufficient, and there you go! (You will need a smidgen of off-road experience).
If you’re heading south from Upington on the N7, Klein Pella is well worth a stop. You’re still on the banks of the Gariep as it snakes its way through this desert land en route to the Atlantic Ocean, so do not miss out on this gorgeous destination.
This 18 000 ha working farm is situated west of the famous Pella Town Cathedral, and boasts the biggest date plantation in the southern hemisphere. Sunsets, sunrises, stone outcrops, incredible stars, a small Quiver Tree Forest, azure skies and crisp air will all conspire to make you saddle up in a harsh but beautiful environment.
You can ride along the many access and gravel district or farm roads, with breathtaking scenery sure to blow your mind. A good ride will be from Klein Pella back towards the main road; look out for the 4x4 route towards Pella Town to explore this historic village. Otherwise, trip through the date plantations and green vineyards and onto the banks of the Orange River.
