The porcupine hills mountain biking route is secreted within the beautiful landscape between Botrivier and Villiersdorp.
Porcupine Hills farm is being developed as a regenerating retreat, with yoga, meditation and such-like courses and escapes on offer.
The MTB route allows you to explore the adjoining farms, and the trail will take you past scenic spots where you can rest and enjoy the views of nature. The route is around 16 km, but you can add some miles if you continue onto the public gravel road.
The 3000ha Stettyn Farm, at the foot of the Stettyn Mountain Range near Villiersdorp, has a 32 kilometres long 4x4 trail. It offers spectacular views in an area rich in varied fynbos. Much of the road is very steep and there are 12 hairpin bends requiring some reversing. It will take about 5 hours to complete which ensures you enough time to really experience the beautiful area. There are camping facilities and a mountain hut which sleeps eight.
The Hottentots Holland Mountains, at Nuweberg on Viljoen's Pass between Grabouw and Villiersdorp, offers a range of hiking trails that are suited to both beginners and serious hikers. You can combine the routes for a longer hike with overnight stops, or do separate day hikes.
The most popular trail is the Nuweberg to Landdroskop and back to Nuweberg along the jeep track. All the hikes take you through exceptionally beautiful landscapes and you’ll have great views of the Riviersonderend gorge and surrounding areas.
The Suicide Gorge is a thrilling hike and its rather pecuilar name cames from its death-defying jumps from cliffs. To reach the kloof entails a good 8.4 km hike into the mountains, and then you can start kloofing, which includes a number of jumps off the cliffs into rocky pools below. Even though this part of the hike is only 1.3 km in length, it's extremely steep and entails a number of high jumps.
The scenery of the hike is absolutely jaw-dropping and hikers who are fit and well-prepared should not miss this incredible hiking experience.
