Activities in Gouritsmond

Gouritsmond Beach

The Gouritsmond Beach is a sandy stretch of extraordinary beauty. It is a Blue Flag beach, so there are more than 30 criteria under the umbrellas of water quality, environmental education and management, environmental information, safety, and the services on offer. The beach is family-friendly, and kids can safely swim, play and explore.

The rust-coloured rocks line the shores of Gouritsmond beach.

The natural beauty of the beach includes powdery beige sands, deep and surging oceans that change in hues in response to the sky. Rust-coloured rocks line the shores, where fishermen cast their rods in hope of catching fish, and the little ones can frolic in the rock pools. The water is relatively warm, and the meeting point of the Indian and Atlantic ocean isn’t far off (at Cape Agulhas).

The waves are great for surfing, stand-up paddling and kite-surfing. The sandy stretch is long enough to work up a sweat on a short jog, or to enjoy a romantic stroll. Building sand castles, catching a tan, or tossing a frisbee are all part of the Gouritsmond Beach experience.

Hiking Trails

African oystercatcher or African black oystercatcher (Haematopus moquini).

Designed to cover a portion of the very popular Oystercatcher Trail's route, the Hunter-Gatherer Trail is a 5-day hike with a guide that will take you along the beautiful coastline of the Garden Route, following various paths and trails of the Khoisan hunter-gatherers who lived on the beaches centuries ago. On the tour, you can take a break from hiking, and kayak along the Gourits River.

On the hike, you can spot a variety of birdlife, including Fish eagles, Sand plovers and Oystercatchers. Your guide will be able to give insight into the relevant historical and geological facts of the surrounds, and you’ll be supplied with reading material about the history and ecology of the Khoisan.
