For centuries, humans have relied on the trusty, majestic animal that is the horse to carry them through some of the most interesting historic events of the world. In South Africa, you’ll find both wild horses meandering along mountain ranges and tamed ones, who allow tourists to see the beauty of the country from a different vantage point.
There are plenty of horse trails hosted by adventure companies around the country. You can do a brisk canter along a beach, a leisurely amble through the vineyards, trot off through the forest or meander through magnificent mountain scenery. Riding is excellent most of the year round but all rides are subject to change due to bad weather.
South Africa has many exciting horseback trekking venues, including the Drakensberg, Plettenberg Bay on the Garden Route, Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape, Lesotho, Stellenbosch in the Western Cape, and Waterberg National Park in the Northern Province. Many nature reserves and game lodges also have the activity on offer.
