Oudtshoorn Ostrich Farm

Oudtshoorn is well known for its ostrich farming, and is often called the ‘Capital of Ostriches’ in Southern Africa. Mooiplaas Ostrich Farm offers visitors a tour of the farm that gives insight into their farming operations.

The tour will give you a chance to meet the amusing ostriches in the farm rings. Then you’ll get to see how people on the farm feed them, their advanced methods and techniques for taking care of ostrich’s eggs and how they hatch them.

They’ll also show you how those chicks are brought up and you’ll get to see the big ostriches up close. Some of the tours will even let you ride on ostrich or watch ostrich races. It’s good fun for the whole family.

Wine Tour

There are a number of great wineries and cellars in the Oudtshoorn area that are worth visiting. You can enjoy a fabulous wine tasting experience in Kurusa Winery, a family-owned business that specialises in the production of Cap Classique and Mediterranean style wines. 

Grundheim Cellar is a centuries-old vineyard that is best known for its offerings of Muscadel, Port, homemade liquors, and “witblits” made in a traditional brandy-still. Their traditional wine-making history is displayed throughout the cellar, and visitors can taste a range of their sweet wines and liquors upon request.

Hiking Trails

Oudtshoorn is blessed with an abundance of Klein Karoo vegetation that can be seen from the area’s various hiking trails. A walk through nature will allow guests to experience the tranquility and peacefulness of the fynbos-lined environment, with flowers and fascinating birdlife on display. 

Popular routes to traverse include the Guarrie trail, which is an easy 20 min walk, the Minwater trail situated in the lovely Minwater Private Game Reserve and the Piet Barbet trail through the Cape Floral Kingdom. The Swartberg Mountains also boasts a number of scenic trails to choose from.
