Situated in the unspoilt Northern Drakensberg, the Drakensberg mountain biking trail system offers a good 100 km of riding along some of the most spectacular highland cranks in South Africa. The beauty of this trail system - which is permanently marked and mapped - is that it links many of the Northern Berg resorts by bike, thus allowing you to access the route from a whole bunch of these venues.
There are four marked trails to choose from at All Out Adventures. Of these, the 10 km Gypsy’s Bend Trail is the best option for beginners. If your skills are up to an intermediate trail, head onto the 17 km Montusi Gorge Trail, or go next-level on the technical 20 km Trilby Trail. Mike’s Pass MTB Trail is a 30-35 km trail on a demanding dirt road, technical jeep track and gnarly management 4x4 tracks.
The mind-blowing Grotto Trail is best left for the truly fearless, as it traverses the Cavern’s Surprise Ridge along narrow single-track that drops off steeply in sections. There are a number of high bridges crossing streams and ravines, and the views as well as the climbs are breathtaking!
The Mnweni area is one of the most remote parts of the Drakensberg, and rated by many as the most dramatically beautiful section of the ‘High Berg’. Basalt spires and pinnacles announces your arrival here in the northern section of Ukhahlamba, between the Royal Natal National Park and Cathedral Peak reserve area. The Mnweni Cultural Centre, located another 4 km from the old police station, serves as a starting point for exploring the area.
This is a ‘mountain trail run’, with all the terrain and weather implications that the term implies. Only the first and last 5 km of the route are jeep track and accessible by vehicle, the remainder of the route is single-track or off-track. The route is not suited to people who are unfamiliar with rugged, single-track trail running.
