The city is situated in a hollow surrounded by hills and is just 100 km from Durban, with which it has intimate ties. It is the gateway on the route between Durban and Johannesburg and hosts an abundance of accommodation, museums, historical architecture and parks. The city is home to the Pietermaritzburg campus of the University of Natal as well as various tertiary education institutions and boarding schools.
