Words of Wisdom

After breakfast, the grandmothers are escorted down to the small arena where Marimba Jam had set up their Marimba´s, playing popular South African songs. The grannies are immediately jubilant as they gravitate towards the music. The MC of the day, Refiloe Madela, and two of the grandmothers address the band members and shoppers. They speak of what it means to be a resilient South African woman and how empowerment through education is of utmost importance.

Gogo Thandie Ngushelo explains, “We are not educated, but we are doing these things. We are educating the youth,” Female strength is also discussed, and the topic of abuse is brought up. The fiery grandmother Nompumelelo Mwanda loudly proclaims, “Ladies, if he smacks you, you leave. Because he will beat you. You leave that man!” Words of encouragement echoes through the mall.

Wisdom passed from those who know life best is an opportunity not many get to experience. Thandie also spoke on the joy that GAPA brings. “GAPA allows us to grow as a community. We support each other and we grow.” Their words are met with loud applause.

Making Joyful Noise

Afterwards, the grandmothers are invited to participate in the Marimba workshop, with members of the band ushering them towards the instruments. The gogo’s excitedly bang on the Marimbas as they are taught what notes to play.

Watching them enjoy themselves, forgetting their worries if only for a moment, was beautiful to witness. There is a strange joy in experiencing someone else's glee in small, sporadic moments such as a grandmother reliving her youth through music, shuffling along to the rhythm.

Soon the grandmothers are seated, a shaker in hand, playing to the beat as Marimba Jam attempts to break the record for biggest Marimba ensemble. A massive roar of applause ensues as the record is broken, the grannies in tow. Female empowerment never sounded so good.
