Awe-Inspiring Sunsets

Elands Bay (also known as Elandsbaai) is renowned for its delicious seafood and its spectacular natural wonders, including the Verlorenvlei Marsh.

Elands Bay is home to numerous guest houses, cottages, B&Bs and hotels. Enjoy awe-inspiring sunsets while tucking into sumptuous seafood delicacies after an exciting day of exploring the town. This small West Coast town is well known among the Cape Town surfing community, with surfers regularly visiting on wave pilgrimage. Besides surfing, this area is rich in rock art and has a prolific bird life. In spring, the floor is covered by a kaleidoscope of colourful flowers, with many bulbs growing in the sandy dunes areas.

Via a Dirt Road

The charming seaside village of Elands Bay.

In the Bobbejaan (Baboon) Mountain above Elands Bay, guests can view numerous Bushmen paintings. Verlorenvlei is also a beautiful setting behind the town that allows for bird watching and stand-up paddle boarding on the quiet vlei water. Elands Bay is not a very well developed tourist area, and can only be reached via a dirt road. It is, however, a worthwhile stop for the adventurous traveller.

One of the major attractions in Elands Bay is the rough and ready, but very atmospheric beach restaurant called Muisbosskerm. Elands Bay is the ideal place to relax and unwind in peaceful surroundings. Enjoy activities such as rowing, sailing, surfing, crayfishing (in season), bird watching, whale watching and fishing, to name but a few.

An Impressive Backdrop

Like most other West Coast towns, Elands Bay (or Elandsbaai) originated as a fishing village, and gradually developed to the north of the harbour. Overlooked by the Bobbejaansberg to the south, and with white sand dunes forming an impressive backdrop to the east, Elands Bay is a pretty village, which depends largely on the crayfish (or rock lobster) industry for its economic well-being.

The long stretch of beach, with its fast and powerful left-breaking waves, ranks among the best surfing spots in the country. An abundance of seafood and its spring flowers are other attractions for visitors who flock to this resort.
