Colenso is a small town in KwaZulu-Natal, located on the southern bank of the Tugela River. Established in 1855 at a ford in the river, the town was named after Anglican Bishop John William Colenso. The town was for many years the site of an enormous power station opened in 1926 to supply power for the electrification of the 274 km railway line between Glencoe and Pietermaritzburg.

This was the second biggest railway electrification scheme in the world, second only to the Chicago line in the United States. Colenso is also the sight of the Battle of Colenso fought in the Second Boer War against the British. The town is most often visited as an access point to the historic battlefields of the area. Colenso’s main attractions are the several sites commemorating historic battles.
