Squashed between the Kouga and Baviaans Mountains, Baviaanskloof is one of the largest nature conservation areas in South Africa. It was ratified as a World Heritage Site in 2004 and is an area of outstanding natural beauty and biodiversity for hikers, mountain bikers and off-road explorers.
Visit the largest sundial in Africa (it has a diameter of 36.4 m) with a toposcope offering commanding views of the Gamtoos Valley floodplain and of course, Sarah Baartman’s grave, one of the Eastern Cape’s human rights icons.
Pack your bird book and binoculars, and get ready to chill out in the shade of huge yellow-wood and white stinkwood trees.
Get a team together and ride the Trans Baviaans MTB Challenge (August), an extreme crank through spectacular scenery.
One of South Africa’s premier mountain biking events, the Trans Baviaans Marathon is known to be both challenging and scenic as it traverses straight through the heart of the Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area. This team event, with teams of 2, 3 or 4 cyclists per team, makes for a unique, enjoyable and achievable MTB race. Make sure at least one of you can map read, as the route is unmarked, testing your orientation abilities and teamwork.
This 230 km in 24-hours race needs some preparation, so charge your headlight batteries, brush up on your orientation skills and start pedaling.
