The town of Pilgrims Rest, Mpumalanga, South Africa.

A visit to Pilgrim’s Rest will take you back in time to the 1830s when the gold rush was gathering momentum in the Lowveld of South Africa. Local lore has it that this quiet backwater dorp was first founded when a miner going by the name Alex Patterson discovered alluvial gold on the farm Ponieskrantz.

Once a bustling mining town, the entire village has been restored as a national monument since 1986, leaving visitors to wander within a living museum, alive with centuries of love, loss and laughter. Pilgrim’s Rest is best experienced through its many museums and historic sites, which opens a captivating window onto a bygone era, its people in their quest for gold.
