Nieuwoudtville is an isolated and peaceful town, situated about 50 kilometres off the N7 and just over 300 kilometres north of Cape Town. This beautiful area is probably best known for its magnificent display of spring flowers. It is a pretty, charming town, and home to some lovely stone houses.
Nieuwoudtville is surrounded by four different vegetation areas, namely Hantam, Bushmanland, the Knersvlakte and Namaqualand. Nieuwoudtville is a picturesque town which was founded in 1897. The spectacular spring flowers it is famous for include many rare bulbs unique to the area. This area has the richest concentration of bulb species in the world. The nearby Waterval Alleen Waterfall drops into a steep sided gorge and is situated about 5 kilometres from Nieuwoudtville.
The main fall is a breathtaking 30 metres high and the gorge boasts a fascinating variety of plant and bird species. To the north and south of Nieuwoudtville are some of the most spectacular ruins in South Africa. These ruins are the remains of the homesteads and outbuildings of the early pioneers and farmers who settled in the Nieuwoudtville area. The ruins are visible from the road if you are traveling out onto the northern and southern sections of the Bokkeveld Plateau.
