Kimberley
The big, frigging hole...that may be what most people think of when you mention Kimberley, but the town actually boasts a history way more interesting than the 215m depression outside the ‘City of Diamonds’.
The Big Hole of Kimberley, Northern Cape.
Speaking of; the actual diamond which started the digging process was discovered in 1866 by a 15-year old shepherd, Erasmus Jacobs, and now, more than 150 years later, Kimberley has risen to become become the capital of the Northern Cape.
To get to the ‘Big Hole’, take a tram ride from the City Hall to go check it out. Imagine, if you will, a man-made hole as big as eight football fields and over 200m deep. Don’t jump, but rather visit the adjacent Mine Museum, an exact replica of the city during the diamond rush or, even better, venture out into the surrounding Karroid countryside in search of adventure.
