Passing Interesting Towns on Route
Heading northeast, Winburg is a pleasant enough town, visit the imposing Voortrekker monument and museum, but the real attraction is 30 kilometres to the north: Willem Pretorius Game Reserve. There are chalets for rent and a campsite.
Thereafter Ventersburg; Total with Steers, Caltex with Maxi’s Restaurant; and Kroonstad, Kronvaal 1-Stop Engen with Wimpy, with its fine sandstone buildings, slip quickly by as your pace quickens towards the city of gold. Parys, although 20 kilometres off the N1, offers a pleasant detour with its river activities such as white-water rafting, picturesque islands in the Vaal, cosy B&Bs and some decent restaurants. Your last two big garage pit stops before Joburg are the Kroonvaal Engen 1-Stop with Wimpy near Parys and Grasmere 1-Stop with Wimpy near Vereeniging.
