Aliwal North is a small town that lies on the border of the Free State and Eastern Cape provinces. The town’s proximity to the Orange River makes it a successful farming community that produces wool, maize, wheat, beef and dairy.
The town of Aliwal North is also known for its two hot mineral springs that have extremely high concentrations of minerals and gases, which formed part of its development.
Aliwal North was a prime commercial centre for the British colony during the 20th century. The railway line close to town connected it to East London, making trade possible. The historic buildings in Aliwal North include the Kerkplein Museum and the Garden of Remembrance, which includes a British blockhouse.
