You will find Winterton on the banks of the Tugela River where it winds its way through the foothills of the high Drakensberg ranges. The town is a typically charming and friendly KwaZulu-Natal pioneer settlement and the looming presence of Champagne Castle and Cathedral Peak add to the natural grandeur of its setting.
The village was originally established as Springfield in 1905 when the Natal government built a weir across the Little Tugela River. In 1910, however, it was renamed Winterton in honour of the then secretary for agriculture, HD Winter.
Scenic beauty, crisp mountain air and crystal clear waters lure visitors to Winterton for hiking, trout fishing and horse riding, but numerous Battlefield and San rock art sites are the main attractions.
