Kalk Bay

Kalk Bay is one of Cape Town’s most popular villages. Its name indicated that this was originally the location of a lime kiln, which produced much of the white wash used to paint the famous Cape Dutch buildings of the colony.

The kiln is no more, but the small business centre of Kalk Bay encourages many hours of happy browsing, with a row of restaurants, bakeries, antique shops, art galleries and ice-cream parlours. To those of us who live along the False Bay coastline, it's interesting to see how some areas have blossomed while others struggle along, quietly fading like old paint.

Kalk Bay is an extraordinary example of how an area can lift itself from the ashes and become an attractive and much-visited village.
