Johannesburg

Johannesburg goes by many names: Egoli (meaning 'place of gold'), Jozi, Joeys, Jo'burg. The city of Johannesburg was established more than a century ago after the discovery of gold along the Witwatersrand.

Johannesburg is characterised by contradiction and an apparent seamless combination of irreconcilable differences. The largest city in South Africa, Johannesburg is also the wealthiest and, without a doubt, the economic powerhouse of Africa. Once you break through the hard-edged business veneer, however, you will find that the Jozi crowd not only works hard, but also plays harder.

Though not seen as an outdoor city, there are, nevertheless, a number of parks and nature reserves to visit, which includes the Emmarentia Dam and the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden. The Magaliesberg is just on your doorstep, and you’re extremely well placed for adventures a little further afield, like the Kruger National Park and the game parks of the Lowveld.
