Full-bodied or Medium-bodied

Ever felt perplexed at the names assigned to wine? Like what does full-bodied mean and what makes a wine medium-bodied and not just regular wine?

And is this physical objectification of wine allowed? Can’t we all just appreciate the personality wine helps to facilitate with, well, its own personality? If you are doing the dual move of mouthing ‘no’ and thinking ‘no’, then please do read on. This is all for you.

Rich and Layered

The plus size of wines is weirdly too much wine for some drinkers and hey that’s okay. Sure “weirdly” remains because judgement nay discernment is real, but it definitely is very much okay. Not everyone is ready for a rich, layered mouth-hug that only a full-bodied wine can deliver. Sometimes sidestepping adult grape joy is a thing.

Moving on, you’ll know this wine by its deep, dark, tannic hue. Sure tannin is not a crowd-puller but it does have a binding effect on the proteins in our saliva resulting in a palate-cleansing effect - a decided win for wine drinking.

Full-bodied wines like it name indicates, is also an independent sister, sis can stand on her own, she does not have to labour as a pairing, but when she feels like it, certainly makes for a wonderful accompaniment to luscious and succulent steak.

In this instance, ‘medium’ is not a placeholder for ‘average’ or ‘meh’, in fact medium-bodied wines are a must if your wine consumption includes food. Let’s be frank here, anything worth doing includes food so yes medium-bodied wines, we want you, you delectable food wine you.

Built with flavour: zaps of zest, aromas and a comparably lower amount of alcohol, acids, tannins and sugars than full-bodied wines, medium-bodied wines make for a sound mid-week feature. 

Not forgetting its range of manifestations permit it to be enjoyed with an assortment of dishes.

So easy on the palate and also the smart choice to reach for when you are 20 minutes late to a social gathering and have zero clue as to what the host enjoys drinking.

For the Light-hearted

Apparently watching the scale means watching what you drink, but if that was the case why do light-bodied wines exist if not to help you through the kilojoule restriction part of your transformation plan? 

Beings of all persuasions I present to you, light-bodied wines. Somewhat transparent, certainly with considerably fewer tannins - which is ideal if you prefer avoiding a slightly bitter and dry aftertaste, light-bodied wines are a winsome vino. Packed with less alcohol (approximately less than 12.5%), lean and assuredly not mean, this crisp wine is a refreshing complement to pretty much any event except driving of course. Never driving.
